1. CALL TO SAVE THE MOUNTAINS OF THE WORLD - HDI PROJECT FLAGSHIP
Covers inland mountains and forested areas; sea mountains called “sea mounts”; tributaries, watershed, wet lands and aquifers; flora and fauna and marine life; - the enhancement of people’s lives without jeopardizing the ability of these ecosystems to support life.

Initiatives/Projects Being Undertaken:

  • Conducts regular monitoring and recommend intervention to effect prompt and timely action to address problems (e.g. at Mount Apo and neighboring mountains, Port Barton, Palawan, etc.);
  • Organize tree planting activities on hot spot areas (including mangroves).
  •  Organize clean up activities on mountains, underwater and coastal areas, rivers and other tributaries;
  • Initiate IEC; Information, Education and Communication Initiatives to educate and enhance awareness on the need to save the environment through print and broadcast media, workshop and training;
  • Influence policy decisions towards saving the environment and enhancing people’s lives
    (e.g. the temporary closure of Mount Apo, the creation of the Davao Gulf Management Council, etc.);
  • Nature Conservancy Programs; HDI supports the conservation of the Philippine Eagle initiated by the Philippine Eagle  Foundation;the sea turtle conservation program of Davao City and others.

2. HUMAN DEVELOPMENT ADVOCACY WORK

Advocates “human development” that put people as the central focus and ultimate end in development or define as “the process of enlarging people’s choices as agent and recipient of the development processes’; or put quality of life as the baseline in development. HDI has three thrust areas -

    a. Access to education;
  • Provides scholarship and financial aid to deserving students;
  • Donates books to school and far flung communities; and organized Seminars/training to enhance capability of teachers;
  • Organized leadership training among students and career guidance on students.
    b. Long and healthy life;
    c. Access to resources for a decent standard of leaving
  • Conduct training on livelihood and trade skills training;
  • Assist on job placement;
  • Advocate the knowledge that quality of life is not directly link to high income the fact, that many wealthy individuals do not enjoy a “better quality of life” since income is only a means thus income depends on how one uses it. Records shows that many low income individuals have achieved a high level of human development by skillfully using available means to enhance human capabilities. HDI also advocates the need to build a strong character knowing that character and dreams determine what a person or group of individuals will become in the future

3. VOLUNTEERISM IN DEVELOPMENT

HDI encourages volunteerism in fostering peace consciousness, human development and the preservation of Mother Nature as stipulated in its Call for Volunteerism Towards Peace Consciousness, Human Development and the Preservation of Mother Nature last March 5, 2001 at Mount Apo Philippines during the celebration of the International Year of Volunteerism led by Mrs. Virginia Davide, the then Director of the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency and the First Lady of the Supreme Court. The call was done in partnership with the Office of the President of the Philippines, UNDP-United Nations Volunteers and others.

HDI was designated as the focal organization designate for Mindanao during the celebration of IYV 2001 by UNV-IYV Team in Bonn Germany as such has organize volunteer activities; given recognition to outstanding volunteers, promotes volunteerism and encourage networking among volunteer organizations. Mobilized volunteers in coastal and mountain clean up activities, and other activities in line with its call.

4. ADOPT A TREE IN THE MOUNTAIN AND HELP FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING
Adopting a tree on the mountain enhances mountains' ability to provide us with the air we breathe, the water we drink and other life giving sustenance. Equally important, these great water towers mitigate global warming as habitat of forest, the economically and natural sink of carbon dioxide that causes the warming of the Earth's surface.

Today, “ADOPT A TREE ON THE MOUNTAIN” has become an urgent cry worldwide, the fact that in recent years we have become living witnesses of beaten up mountain ranges, denuded with trees, exploited and vandalized that have weakened its ability to sustain life; and induced man made disasters causing heavy loss of life and property. Further increased global warming.

Let us all awaken to these hard realities and expand our expression of justice, compassion and harmony to the natural realm of Mother Earth, for just like human beings, mountains too are pained by our countless neglect and abuse that seriously threaten our very own existence and the Living Planet Earth.

5. WORLDWIDE ADVOCACY ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND THE NEED TO SAVE THE MOUNTAINS OF THE WORLD
